Informed Consent
Your initial visit and consultation will involve filling out some administrative forms. You will be advised of our qualifications, about the client-counsellor relationship, what to expect during the counselling process such as methods and approaches, as well as the fees and the method of payment. You will then be given an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the counselling process that was not covered. Finally, you will be asked to sign an Informed Consent Form which essentially is an agreement between you and the counsellor with regard to the above. Essentially, the Informed Consent Form is a contract between the client and the counsellor.
Your Privacy
Your privacy is important. However, as part of the initial consultation process you will be asked for your personal information such as your address and phone number. We will not share this information without your consent. This information shall only be used:
- for my administrative purposes and
- for a third party referral such as another counsellor specializing in a therapeutic approach necessary for your treatment or medical specialist.
You should also be aware that we participate in monthly consultations with a clinical supervisor and will discuss certain details about your case without naming names. These clinical consultations are a standard practice to ensure growth as a professional counsellor and to ensure that you receive compassionate and non-judgemental counselling.
Confidentiality
We are bound by the CPCA professional code of ethics to not release a client's personal or therapy-related information without the client's written consent except in exceptional circumstances. Under these exceptional circumstances we are ethically and legally bound to disclose information to a third party, namely the police, EMT or other clinical professionals, without your consent. These ocassions would be:
- if required by a court order
- if there is a suspicion of child abuse or
- if the client is in imminent danger of harming themselves or others
